Image: Wheat fields at coal burning power plant
Wheat fields at coal burning power plant
Caption : Wheat Fields at a coal burning power plant in Poland.
Facts: Fossil fuel power contributes to acid rain, global warming, and air pollution. Coal combustion also results in the emission of fly ash, tiny solid particles that are dangerous to public health. (Natural gas plants emit little to no fly ash). Coal burning power plants emit carbon dioxide which has been positively correlated with a rise in global temperatures, also known as climate change. The burining of coal also releases low levels of uranium, thorium, and other radioactive isotopes. In comparing a coal burning plant with a nuclear plant (producing the same amount of electricity) one finds that a coal buring plant generates some one hundred times more radioactive emissions. Additionally, trace amounts of mercury are sometimes released in the process of burning coal. Mercury is a neurotoxic heavy metal.
