Image: Sludge from copper mine
Sludge from copper mine
Caption : Sludge from copper mine flowing into settling pond - Chile.
Facts: The most common source of copper ore is the mineral chalcopyrite. This mineral accounts for some fifty percent of copper production In prehistoric times, copper could be found as native copper on the surface of the ground - this made prospecting for copper quite easy. Today, however, there is much more demand for copper ore and gaining access to copper now means addressing the more marginal forms. As such, most copper is currently mined from large open pit mines where deposits typically contain only about 0.4 to 1.0 percent copper.
