| Facts: Machu Picchu was an Incan city built around 1450. The site, which now lay in ruins, was abandoned about 100 years later. It is located eighty kilometers northwest of Cusco, Peru, high above the Urubamba Valley. The Inca were a civilisation that lived in the Andean regions of northern South America - they thrived in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tall peak in the background of the photo is called Huayna Picchu. |
