Image: Easter Island statues row
Easter Island statues row

Caption : A row of Easter Island statues.
Facts: Easter Island or "Rapa Nui" as it is sometimes known is in the South Pacific several thousand miles off the coast of Chile. These statues top an ahu (burial platform) and look inland. The largest erected "moai" - as the statues are also known - is some 33 feet tall and weighs in at over 80 tons, and there is evidence in the rock quarries that the islanders were carving larger statues. It is believed that the inhabitants virtually deforested the island to aid in erecting the statues (rollers and levers) leading to soil erosion, starvation and a collapse of the ecosystem and their civilization.
