 |
| Facts: The star trails are the result of a long-exposure photograph and the rotation of the earth. Easter Island is also known as Rapa Nui. It is located in the South Pacific about 3600 kilometers off the coast of Chile. The island is most famous for the giant head statues known as "moai". There are some 887 moai statues in existence - most on the island but some in museums. It is believed that the inhabitants virtually deforested the island to aid in erecting the statues (rollers and levers) leading to soil erosion, starvation and a collapse of the ecosystem and their civilization.
