Easter Island Statues

Caption : Moai statues on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the South Pacific
Facts: Easter Island is located about 3600 kilometers off the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean. It is also known as Rapa Nui, a name given to it by Tahitian sailors in the mid 1800's. The island is most famous for the giant head statues known as "moai". There are some 887 moai statues in existence - most on the island but some in museums. These monoliths are on average about 14.5 feet tall and weigh about 14 tons. Some are much larger. The decline of the Easter island civilization is thought to be due to the inhabitants destruction of the ecosystem - deforesting the island in order to erect the moai.
