| Facts: The Very Large Array, or VLA, consists of 27 radio antennas each 25 meters in diameter and each weighing some two hundred and thirty-five tonnes. This is the world's largest radio telescope array. The dishes can be moved to various positions along the arms of a Y- shaped railway network. The telescopes in the array can be combined using interferometry techniques to give the resolution of a 22 mile diameter antenna. |
