Image: Moving VLA radio antenna
Moving VLA radio antenna
Caption : Technicians preparing to move an antenna which makes up part of the Very Large Array radio telescope. Photographed near Socorro, New Mexico, USA.
Facts: A transporter (seen in red in the photograph) is moved under the antenna in order to lift it up and move it along a set of railroad tracks. Moving the antenna from one station to another takes about two hours. The Very Large Array, or VLA, consists of 27 radio antennas each 25 meters in diameter and each weighing some two hundred and thirty-five tonnes. This is the world's largest radio telescope array. The telescopes are set out in a Y shaped railway network allowing the antennas to be moved. The telescopes in the array can be combined using interferometry techniques to give the resolution of a 22 mile diameter antenna.
