| Facts: Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the world's largest producer of crude oil from oil sands . In 2007 the company produced 111 million barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend. They are headquartered in Fort McMurray, a small city 435 kilometers northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Tailings are the wastes rejected from the plant after most of the recoverable materials have been extracted. The primary function of a tailings pond is to allow heavy metals to settle out before water is discharged into the receiving watershed. Tailings ponds can be dangerous as the wastes are sometimes toxic and/or corrosive and detrimental to the environment. |
