Sulphur piles at loading station

Caption : Piles of sulphur at a loading station for bulk transport ships. Photographed near Vancouver, Canada.
Facts: Sulphur is a chemical element and has the atomic number 16. It is an essential component of all living cells and can be found in some amino acids. It is used commercially in fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, gunpowder and matches among other things. Stricter fossil fuel standards which require more of the sulphur to be removed from fossil fuels is an increasing means of suplphur production. Sulphur is a key component in Sulphur dioxide (S02) which is created upon fossil fuel combustion (primarily by power plants, motor vehicles, etc). Sulpher dioxide reacts with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to produce acid rain which has been shown to have adverse effects on freshwater bodies and aquatic life, forests, soils, and humans.
