Image: Nevada Solar One at sunrise
Nevada Solar One at sunrise
Caption : Nevada Solar One at sunrise. Photographed in Boulder City, Nevada.
Facts: The Nevada Solar One power plant can be found in Boulder City, Nevada, USA. It is the 3rd largest solar power plant in the world with a nominal production capacity of 64 megawatts. Nevada Solar One began operation in June of 2007 and it has 760 rows of parabolic mirrors that focus the suns energy onto a solar receiving tube (often called a Dewar tube). This tube is located along the focal point of the rows of mirrors and contains a heat transfer fluid (in this case a mineral oil). The oil is heated to 735 degrees Fahrenheit and is used to create steam that in turn drives a generator that produces electricity. The plant uses more than 180,000 mirrors.
