| Caption: Spawning sockeye salmon. Adams River, British Columbia, Canada |
|
 |
| Facts: All pacific salmon, including the sockeye, die after spawning (atlantic salmon may spawn several times). In the foreground of this photo you can see several dead sockeye. Interestingly, salmon are born in freshwater streams then migrate to live most of their lives in the saltwater ocean. Salmon return to the very stream they were born to spawn. The means by which salmon can find their natal stream is not known and speculation ranges from "sensitivity to magnetic fields" to "smell". |
